What to Expect From the Redesigned 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE

When Mercedes-Benz introduced the M-Class in 1997, it created the blueprint for the modern luxury SUV. The twin-star headlamp signature announces the change from the first glance, while the ability to tow up to 7,700 lbs when properly equipped shows that luxury and capability still go hand in hand.

This is the GLE that finally integrates artificial intelligence into every aspect of the driving experience. The new MB.OS supercomputer replaces the previous software architecture entirely, enabling over-the-air updates that keep the vehicle current long after delivery.

A Powertrain for Every Priority

The 2027 GLE lineup spans five distinct models, each built around a different engine philosophy.

The GLE 350 4MATIC uses a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder producing 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It reaches 96.6 km/h in 6.8 seconds - quick enough for highway merging and passing without feeling strained.

The GLE 450 4MATIC steps up to a 3.0L inline-six with 375 hp and 413 lb-ft. The six-cylinder delivers smoother power delivery and stronger mid-range pull, cutting the 0-60 time to 5.0 seconds.

The GLE 500e 4MATIC pairs that same 3.0L six-cylinder with a 181-hp electric motor for a combined 429 hp and 502 lb-ft.

The plug-in hybrid offers 106 km of all-electric range - enough to cover daily errands without burning fuel. When the battery depletes, the engine takes over smoothly. The 0-60 time sits at 5.5 seconds.

The GLE 580 4MATIC brings a redesigned 4.0L V8 producing 530 hp and 553 lb-ft. Mercedes switched from a cross-plane to a flat-plane crankshaft, which changes the exhaust note and improves throttle response. The V8 reaches 96.6 km/h in 4.4 seconds and pairs exclusively with the E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension that adjusts each wheel independently.

The AMG GLE 53 HYBRID sits at the top of the range with a plug-in hybrid powertrain producing 577 hp and 553 lb-ft. The 3.0L inline-six pairs with a 181-hp electric motor to deliver 0-60 in 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 249 km/h.

All five models use the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Top speed is electronically limited to 209 km/h on most models, with the AMG GLE 53 HYBRID reaching 249 km/h.

The Technology That Changes How You Drive

The MBUX Superscreen is now standard across the lineup. Three 12.3-inch displays sit under a single piece of glass that spans the dashboard. The driver gets a digital instrument cluster, the centre screen handles navigation and vehicle settings, and the passenger gets their own display for entertainment and climate control.

The MB.OS supercomputer runs the entire system. It uses artificial intelligence to learn your preferences - seat position, climate settings, favourite routes - and adjusts automatically. The system connects to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, which means updates download wirelessly without a dealership visit.

Google Maps integration replaces the previous navigation system. The MBUX Virtual Assistant handles complex voice commands and displays expressive avatars on the screen when you speak to it.

The redesigned headlamps use DIGITAL LIGHT technology that projects a high-resolution light field onto the road. The system can illuminate specific areas - like the edges of the lane or a pedestrian crossing - without blinding oncoming traffic.

The twin-star motif in each headlamp is the most visible design change. Two star shapes sit inside each housing, creating a signature that identifies the new GLE from a block away. The grille features an illuminated central Mercedes-Benz star and available contour lighting that outlines the grille frame.

Suspension That Reads the Road Ahead

The AIRMATIC air suspension is available with cloud-based damper control. The system uses GPS and camera data to identify bumps and potholes ahead, then adjusts the damping before the wheels reach them.

The GLE 580 4MATIC offers E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, which regulates each wheel individually. The system analyzes the driving situation 1,000 times per second and adapts the suspension accordingly. It can stabilize the body during hard cornering, reduce pitch under braking, and keep the vehicle level when towing.

The standard panoramic sliding roof covers over 10.8 square feet of glass - one of the largest in the segment.

Safety Systems That Anticipate Problems

Distance Assist DISTRONIC maintains a set following distance from the vehicle ahead and can bring the GLE to a complete stop in traffic.

The camera network monitors blind spots, detects cross traffic when reversing, and provides a 360-degree view when parking. The system can identify pedestrians and cyclists and apply the brakes automatically if a collision seems likely.

Interior Space and Towing Capability

The second row offers power-adjustable seats that move fore and aft by up to 99 mm. The backrests recline by 18 degrees, and the seats fold in a 40:20:40 split.

The controls sit in each rear door, and a separate switch panel in the cargo area lets you fold the seats without opening the rear doors.

An optional third row adds two more seats for occasional use. The power easy-entry function moves the second row forward at the touch of a button to create access to the third row.

The GLE tows up to 7,700 lbs when properly equipped - enough for a large boat trailer or a camper.

The Verdict on the Redesigned GLE

The 2027 GLE offers the most meaningful update to the model since the M-Class became the GLE in 2016.

The MB.OS supercomputer, MBUX Superscreen, and cloud-based suspension control move the GLE into a new generation of luxury SUVs that use artificial intelligence to adapt to the driver. The powertrain range covers everything from efficient four-cylinder commuting to 577-hp plug-in hybrid performance.

The twin-star headlamps and illuminated grille star give the GLE a more distinctive presence, while the ability to tow 7,700 lbs shows that luxury doesn't mean sacrificing capability.

Exploring the AI-Powered Cabin of the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLS

Mercedes-Benz has spent the past decade building vehicles that think. The 2027 GLS takes that philosophy further than any full-size SUV before it - not with flashier screens or louder voice commands, but with a supercomputer that learns how you drive, what you need, and when you need it. The cabin is built around MB.OS, Mercedes-Benz's first true operating system, and it changes how the vehicle... Read more
