Exploring the AI-Powered Cabin of the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLS

Mercedes-Benz has spent the past decade building vehicles that think. The 2027 GLS takes that philosophy further than any full-size SUV before it - not with flashier screens or louder voice commands, but with a supercomputer that learns how you drive, what you need, and when you need it.

The cabin is built around MB.OS, Mercedes-Benz's first true operating system, and it changes how the vehicle responds to you from the moment you open the door.

This is not about adding more buttons or menus. It is about removing them. The new MBUX Superscreen spans the width of the dashboard under a single sheet of glass, and the AI-powered Virtual Assistant handles requests in plain language - no memorizing commands, no hunting through submenus.

The Supercomputer That Runs It All

MB.OS is the foundation. Every function in the GLS - climate, navigation, drive modes, entertainment, driver assistance - runs through this single operating system.

When you ask the Virtual Assistant to find a charging-friendly route, it does not just plot the path - it preconditions the battery, adjusts the climate system to preserve range, and updates the arrival time based on real-time traffic.

The system is cloud-connected, which allows over-the-air updates for the entire vehicle. New features, performance refinements, and interface improvements arrive wirelessly. The GLS you drive in 2027 will not be the same vehicle in 2028 - it evolves.

The hardware behind MB.OS is a water-cooled supercomputer with processing power designed for future functions Mercedes-Benz has not yet announced. As the brand develops new driver assistance features or entertainment options, the GLS can receive them without needing a hardware upgrade.

MBUX Superscreen: Three Displays, One Surface

The MBUX Superscreen is standard on every 2027 GLS. Three 12.3-inch displays sit under a smooth glass surface that stretches across the dashboard. The driver gets a digital instrument cluster, the centre screen handles navigation and vehicle controls, and the front passenger gets a dedicated display for entertainment.

The passenger screen changes how the front seat feels. While the vehicle is in motion, the passenger can stream video from Disney+, YouTube, or Sony RIDEVU - as long as the driver's gaze stays on the road.

The system uses eye-tracking to ensure the driver is not watching the passenger screen. If the driver glances over, the content pauses.

MBUX Zero Layer is the interface philosophy. Instead of burying functions in menus, the system surfaces the most relevant controls and recently used apps on the home screen. You do not scroll to find the seat heater - it appears when the cabin is cold. The system learns your patterns and adjusts.

The optional 3D instrument cluster adds depth to the driver display. Speed, navigation arrows, and driver assistance graphics appear to float in front of the screen.

The Virtual Assistant That Understands Context

The 2027 GLS introduces a version powered by AI that can handle multi-turn conversations. You can ask it to lower the temperature, then follow up with "make it a bit warmer in the back" without repeating the full command. It understands pronouns, context, and vague requests.

The assistant now features expressive avatars - visual representations that respond to your voice with subtle animations. You can choose the avatar style that suits you, or turn it off entirely if you prefer a voice-only interface.

Natural language processing means you do not need to memorize exact phrases. "I'm cold" triggers the seat heater and climate adjustment. "Find a coffee shop" opens navigation with nearby options. The system interprets intent, not just keywords.

Navigation Powered by Google Maps

Digital Extra: MBUX Navigation pairs Google Maps technology with the Mercedes-Benz interface. You get real-time traffic data, satellite imagery, and Google's search database - but the layout and controls stay consistent with the rest of MBUX.

The system integrates with the rest of the vehicle. If you set a destination, the GLS can precondition the cabin to your preferred temperature by the time you arrive. If the route includes a long highway stretch, the system can suggest activating Digital Extra: Distance Assist DISTRONIC for adaptive cruise control.

Voice commands work smoothly. "Navigate to the nearest gas station" pulls up options without touching the screen. "Avoid highways" reroutes instantly.

Rear Seat Entertainment for Long Drives

The optional Rear Seat Entertainment Package adds two 11.6-inch displays mounted on the front seatbacks. Rear passengers get independent control over streaming apps, games, and audio. Each screen can show different content - one passenger can watch a movie while the other plays a game.

The available Executive Rear Seat Package Plus includes new MBUX remote controls. Rear passengers can adjust their seat position, climate zone, and entertainment options without leaning forward to reach the centre console.

The 2027 GLS is equipped with ten exterior cameras, up to five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. That sensor array feeds data to the MB.OS supercomputer, which uses AI to assess the driving situation 1,000 times per second.

Digital Extra: Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Digital Extra: MB.DRIVE ASSIST are standard. These systems handle adaptive cruise control, lane centring, and automatic speed adjustments based on traffic conditions. The GLS can maintain a set distance from the vehicle ahead, slow for curves, and resume speed when the road clears.

Digital Extra: MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST is also standard. The system detects parking spaces on both sides of the vehicle - even spaces without marked lines - and can execute the parking maneuver automatically. If you activate the function, the GLS steers itself into the spot while you control the accelerator and brake.

The Digital Extra: Reverse maneuvering function allows the GLS to automatically reverse part of the route you just drove. If you pull into a tight driveway and need to back out, the system can retrace your path with steering support.

Digital Extra: MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST 360 with a 360-degree camera provides a top-down view of the vehicle and its surroundings. The Digital Extra: Rim Protection Warning displays distance alerts when maneuvering in tight spaces, helping you avoid curb damage.

Over-the-Air Updates and the Mercedes-Benz Store

MB.OS enables over-the-air updates for the entire vehicle. Mercedes-Benz can push new features, performance refinements, and interface improvements wirelessly. You do not visit a service centre for software updates - they arrive overnight while the GLS is parked.

The Mercedes-Benz Store and the Mercedes-Benz app let you customise the GLS even after purchase. Digital Extras include on-demand functions, entertainment apps, and driver assistance features.

Why the AI Cabin Matters

The 2027 GLS is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV where the technology feels like it is working for you instead of waiting for you to figure it out. The MBUX Superscreen, the AI-powered Virtual Assistant, and the MB.OS operating system create a cabin that anticipates what you need and surfaces it before you ask.

For buyers who want a full-size SUV that feels modern without being complicated, the GLS delivers. The technology is sophisticated, but the experience is simple. You talk to it like a person, it responds like it understands, and the cabin adapts to how you use it.
