Everything You Should Know About the All-New Mercedes-AMG GT SUV

In its 59-year history, Mercedes-AMG had never developed a full-size SUV entirely in-house. The 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV changes that. It was engineered from the ground up in Affalterbach, Germany, and it is the second model built on the AMG.EA high-performance electric platform, after the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.

The all-electric GT SUV is set to arrive at Canadian dealerships in summer 2027 in three versions: the AMG GT 53 SUV, the AMG GT 55 SUV and the AMG GT 63 SUV. Peak output ranges from 536 hp to 1,153 hp, and the top models are designed to accept up to 710 kW of DC fast charging.

A Full-Size SUV With a GT Driving Position

The GT SUV keeps the space of a full-size SUV and gives it the low, sporty feel of an AMG GT. Drivers sit low, the centre of gravity is low, and the roofline slopes down toward a rear spoiler. A flat battery in the floor leaves room for generous headroom and solid ground clearance.

The body uses aluminum, steel and fibre-reinforced composites, and the battery sits at the centre of the structure inside a protective crash housing. The GT 63 and GT 55 measure 5,085 mm long and 1,656 mm tall on a 3,040 mm wheelbase. Assembly will take place at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen, Germany.

Three Models, Two Electric Drivetrains

The AMG GT 63 SUV and AMG GT 55 SUV use three axial flux electric motors. Two share one drive unit on the rear axle. The third sits up front as a booster: it engages when extra power or traction is needed and disconnects under light loads to save energy.

The AMG GT 53 SUV uses two permanently excited synchronous motors, one on each axle. At the rear, a two-speed transmission uses a short first gear for strong launches and a taller second gear for highway speeds.

  • AMG GT 53 SUV: 536 hp and 590 lb-ft, 106 kWh battery, 0 to 97 km/h (0–60 mph) in 4.1 seconds, top speed of 230 km/h
  • AMG GT 55 SUV: 805 hp and 1,372 lb-ft, 128 kWh battery, 0 to 97 km/h in 3.0 seconds, available top speed of 270 km/h
  • AMG GT 63 SUV: 1,153 hp and 1,475 lb-ft, 128 kWh battery, 0 to 97 km/h in 2.6 seconds, top speed of 270 km/h

Sustained power matters as much as peak power here. The GT 63 and GT 55 both hold up to 711 hp of continuous output, and the GT 53 holds 362 hp. In the Comfort, Sport and AMGFORCE Sport+ drive programs, a single pull on both steering wheel paddles adds boost power and sharper throttle response. In the GT 63, boost lasts up to 63 seconds.

An 800-Volt Battery Built for Repeat Performance

AMG developed the battery in Affalterbach with lessons from Formula 1. It runs on 800-volt technology, with a usable capacity of 106 kWh or 128 kWh. Inside are tall, narrow cylindrical cells. A non-conductive oil flows directly around each cell to keep temperatures even, so full power is available again and again.

Range reaches up to 700 km on the WLTP cycle with the 128 kWh battery, and up to 668 km for the GT 53. The GT 63 and GT 55 accept up to 710 kW of DC power and charge from 10 to 80 per cent in 12 minutes. The GT 53 accepts up to 600 kW and does the same in 11 minutes. At 400-volt stations, the system switches modes automatically, and AC charging runs at up to 11 kW.

Chassis Technology That Sharpens Every Corner

The new AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ suspension is standard on the GT 63 and available on the GT 55. Active hydraulic elements replace traditional anti-roll bars to control body roll and pitch, which means less nose dive under braking and less lift under hard acceleration. Three-stage adjustable air springs also lower the body at speed to reduce drag.

Every model gets active rear-axle steering. Below 80 km/h, the rear wheels turn up to 6 degrees opposite the front wheels for tighter turns and easier parking. Above 80 km/h, they turn with the front wheels for added stability. AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive is standard, and carbon ceramic brakes come standard on the GT 63.

Seven Drive Programs and the AMG RACE ENGINEER

Seven AMG DYNAMIC SELECT programs cover daily driving to track days: Comfort, Sport, AMGFORCE Sport+, RACE, Slippery, Eco and Individual. RACE adds Drift Mode, Drag Race, Track Race and Launch Control.

AMGFORCE Sport+ plays the recorded sound of an AMG V8 in the GT 63 and GT 55, or an AMG six-cylinder in the GT 53. It also simulates gear changes through the paddles and adds seat vibration. With the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package, standard on the GT 63 and available on the GT 55, three rotary dials on the centre console adjust motor response, handling balance and traction control.

Bold Design and Active Aerodynamics

The GT SUV has a steep front end, a wide track, frameless side windows and six round turbine-design taillights. On the GT 63 and GT 55, an active AEROKINETICS roof spoiler changes its angle to cut drag or add stability, while front bumper louvres stay closed to help range and open only when extra cooling is needed.

A Driver-Focused Cabin With AI-Powered MBUX

Inside, a 14-inch multimedia display and a 10.2-inch driver display are angled toward the driver, and a 14-inch passenger display is available. A three-passenger rear seat is standard. The trunk holds 606 litres and the front trunk adds 79 litres. The new-generation MBUX system uses AI from ChatGPT, Microsoft and Google for natural conversations, and the AMG TRACK PACE app records lap and sector times.

Which Everyday Trips Can the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e Cover Without Gas?

Many days are built around a school drop-off, a grocery run, and a commute that starts and ends in the same driveway. The 2026 GLC 350e is built around exactly that pattern, and knowing where its electric range actually fits your routine is the difference between driving gas-free most days or wondering why the engine keeps kicking in. Why Your Daily Routine Decides How Much You’ll Use Electric... Read more

What Adjustable Regenerative Braking Adds to Driving the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA

Lifting off the accelerator in the 2026 CLA feels different depending on how you’ve set it up. That’s not an accident. Mercedes-Benz built the all-electric CLA with a regenerative braking system the driver can dial in, rather than a single fixed behaviour every driver has to accept. For Quebec shoppers cross-shopping their first EV, that adjustability matters more than a spec sheet number. It... Read more
