All-New Mercedes-Benz CLA Delivers 670+ km of Real-World Range

The all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA has been unveiled in Europe, introducing an electric vehicle with impressive range capabilities. Recently announced with a WLTP range of up to 792 kilometres for the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology, this translates to approximately 670+ kilometres of real-world range based on typical NRCan/EPA adjustments, which tend to be about 15% lower than European figures.

It's important to note that North American specifications haven't been announced yet. The European model gives us a preview of what might eventually arrive here, though features and performance metrics may differ when the vehicle reaches our market.

Advanced Battery Technology

The CLA's range comes from its lithium-ion battery with a usable energy content of 85 kWh. The battery uses anodes that combine silicon oxide with graphite, increasing energy density by up to 20% compared to conventional graphite anodes.

With a volumetric energy density of 680 Wh/l, the battery system provides substantial power while maintaining efficiency. For drivers, this translates to fewer charging stops during long trips.

The new battery design also reduces carbon footprint by approximately 30% per cell compared to previous generations, according to Mercedes-Benz.

Efficient Charging Capabilities

The 800-volt electric architecture allows for faster charging times. European specifications indicate the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology can add up to 325 kilometres of range in about 10 minutes when connected to a DC fast charger.

This quick charging capability shifts how drivers plan longer journeys. The CLA supports fast DC charging at up to 320 kW, making stops for power significantly shorter.

Range Optimization Systems

The CLA incorporates several systems that work together to maximize driving range:

A two-speed gearbox on the rear axle balances performance with efficiency. First gear provides acceleration and towing capacity, while second gear optimizes power delivery at highway speeds, enhancing range during longer drives.

The vehicle also features an air-to-air heat pump as standard equipment. This system utilizes three energy sources: waste heat from the electric drivetrain, the battery, and ambient air. According to Mercedes-Benz, it requires only about one-third of the electrical energy that a comparable auxiliary heater would need.

Hybrid Options Expected

While the all-electric models are the initial focus, Mercedes-Benz has announced that hybrid CLA options with 48-volt technology will follow later in the year in Europe.

These hybrid models will feature a combustion engine available in three power levels, with both front-wheel drive and 4MATIC all-wheel drive options. The electric motor will provide support across the speed range, with capabilities for all-electric driving at urban speeds when less than 20 kW of power is needed.

Mercedes-Benz Operating System

The CLA is the first vehicle to fully operate on the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). This system enables over-the-air updates for important vehicle functions, helping the vehicle maintain current technology over time.

The fourth generation of MBUX introduces a more personalized experience with artificial intelligence integration from both Microsoft and Google. The MBUX Virtual Assistant enables complex dialogues that make interactions with the vehicle more intuitive.
