2020 Mercedes-Benz G550 Review: A Luxury SUV Worth The Price Tag

For 2020, Mercedes refined the G-Wagon. Now, the interior is more refined and has the latest car tech. But, is it worth $150,000?

A convincing way to look and feel like a celebrity when rolling up to your favorite local establishment is at the wheel of a G-Class. If the classic SUV’s blocky, military-spec design doesn’t immediately grab attention, one of Mercedes’ plethora of color options will, my tester finished in an electrifying deep blue metallic. No matter what you think of it, the G-Class gets noticed. Some love it, some despise it, but all respect it.

Introduced in 2018 as a 2019 model, the renewed G-Class wears mostly new body panels, all-new lighting elements, and wholly different trim from front to back. Its boxy utilitarian design is now iconic, so Mercedes wouldn’t mess with that, but the new look has been refined, with those in the know recognizing the differences instantly.

While the redesign can be safely slotted into the subtle category, the interior update was dramatic. The fit, finish, and quality of everything has been improved, and most notably Mercedes found a way to incorporate its now trademark all-in-one digital gauge cluster and infotainment display within the SUV’s shallow instrument panel. Fitting it was probably easier than a new set of analog gauges would’ve been, being that such displays aren’t very thick and don’t require old-school mechanical cables, but either way the look immediately modernizes the interior, relegating 2018 models and older to classic yesteryear status.

Expensive Yes, But To Those In The Know The G-Class Is Worth Every Penny

Granted, it’s pricey in consumer trims, starting at $147,900 CAD but along with all the refinement and luxury you’ll that sum provides one of the best 4x4s money can buy.
